Tools for Digital Storytelling, Presentations & Projects
This page contains online tools for students to present via digital storytelling.
Definition: (from http://digitalstorytelling.coe.uh.edu/)
Digital Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view.
However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between two and ten minutes. The topics that are used in Digital Storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of
historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between. Some are presenter-absent (videos or click-through/around images and text) others are cues to a live presenter (like old fashioned slide shows used to be). The idea is that technology is used as a new medium, but without sacrificing the purpose of the assignment, or the integrity of the story.
This rubric is meant to help guide in the creation of your Digital Storytelling presentation project.
This rubric can be used with any tool from PowerPoints to Prezis to Videos.
Each category in the far left column represents a component of the project that will be taken into
consideration when calculating the final grade for this assignment. Review the rubric carefully
before, during and after the creation of your Digital Storytelling presentation, to ensure that all
intended elements of your project and purpose
Always remember to teach, establish and require good presentation skills (think about what you learned in art, English, etc.)
Discuss font size, colors, distractions...tell a good STORY with your product. Don't overload visuals with text . Put information in the "Notes" section, or keep a separate file for the
"script" - the visuals should be simple, clear, and serve as a cue or prompt for the presenter to elaborate.
Showcase the tools (below, or others) that students will have for their choices*
A healthy rubric will have no more than 20% of the grade dependent on their achievement within the technology tool - the majority of the grade basis should be on content. Click here for a Google Doc with guidelines for an example Video Tutorial Rubric(http://bit.ly/tutorialrubric)
*Consider this: YOU the teacher are not necessarily responsible for being the expert on all tools that your students may use.
Have the STUDENTS become responsible for learning/presenting the tools prior to the project for which they will be used.
